The couplet above by national poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar aptly suits Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma persona, and his journey from a college student to ruling Assam and finally becoming the most influential leader of Assam. It is the aura of his personality carved out of sheer grit and determination that shines imbibing a sense of confidence among the people of Assam.
For the first time, Assam, after 75 years of freedom, and being exposed to a galaxy of leaders who lured the masses with false promises and claims constantly, is now witnessing a performing leader whose USP is taking his new ideas to implementation and ensuring their successful execution, unlike others.
Today, on the occasion of HCM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma's birthday, I wish him a healthy and prosperous life. At the same time, I analyse the unique elements that have sustained his leadership over Assam for years, and with more to come.
What was that attraction, which sustained people’s confidence in the Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during the toughest times that Assam faced over years? People never lost trust in him. If you do a random survey in any nook or corner of Assam, the major factor that would make the difference is the developmental works and the connection of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma with people.
The reason for this confidence is the track record of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam politics and now as Chief Minister of Assam with fresh hopes. It was their firm belief that the man always has the potential to deliver even during troubled times.
Just recall those terrible days of Assam when it was under the shadow of insurgency or be it during the protest of CAA and see the situation now. Assam never lost its trajectory of peace and progress because Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma even before becoming the CM of Assam ensured this. This year for the first time insurgent group ULFA-I announced no shutdown on Republic day and people enjoyed this day freely. The credit goes to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma who with his extraordinary diplomatic skills made this possible.
I have never seen a leader in whom people have complete trust. He has managed to sustain this faith and trust, and it points towards the assertion that Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has delivered according to their expectations against all odds.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is a different Chief Minister altogether as he is not bound by unnecessary traditional protocol. His intent is to deliver governance to the people at their doorsteps. For that, he removed the bottlenecks in the government that made the system lethargic. For instance, he ensured that all departments should not necessarily take permission every time from the Chief Minister to implement or announce any reforms.
Indeed, he introduced many ideas of governance with Indic and civilizational perspective that catapulted him into a different league among political leaders, as the majority of the leaders today don’t have the courage to talk about such ideas, forget about implementing them.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s interaction with the public is so unique and informal that it is as if a father were talking to his elder son or a youth were talking to his friend or an elder brother. This connection with the public of Assam today builds a strong faith among the public of Assam for Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Before Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, no leader dared to speak openly and aggressively on demographic and identity issues that Assam is facing today. He is the first Chief Minister who made people about the importance of Indic identity with the Assam perspective.
It is evident from the popularity of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma when people even outside Assam today consider him the biggest face of Hindutva who is not shy to speak about his culture and against Islamic aggression.
On his birthday today, I wish Hon'ble Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma a healthy life. May he continue to serve Assam in the future with some dedication and willpower for the welfare of the people of Assam.
